National Cerebral Palsy Day

20
Oct
2022
October 20th is National Cerebral Palsy Day, since 2013 in Portugal. With the Federation of Portuguese Cerebral Palsy Associations (FAPPC), the aim is to demystify prejudices related to cerebral palsy and raise awareness of the importance of respect and inclusion for those who suffer from this disease.

Unfortunately, prejudice and discrimination are still obstacles to people with disabilities today, such as the lack of opportunities in the job market, difficulties in accessing education or limitations to freedom of movement and social participation. According to several studies, disability is the second most cited reason for discrimination in Portugal.

Cerebral palsy refers to developmental disorders that affect movement control, posture and balance. This deficiency is a brain disorder that occurs during fetal development or due to brain damage after birth, the most common cause of this deficiency being hypoxia. Unfortunately, it is a permanent injury that affects 2 in every 1000 children, currently in Portugal more than 20 thousand people experience this type of paralysis.
