National Breast Cancer Prevention Day Start › News < back 30 Oct 2022 October 30th marks National Breast Cancer Prevention Day, preceding this day with the celebration of World Breast Health Day, making this month dedicated to breast health and hence becoming known as, “October Rosa” through the awareness raising action of the Portuguese League against Cancer. This date's main objective is to increase the population's awareness of the importance of preventive screening and early diagnosis. Raising awareness among the population, especially among women, about the importance of reducing risk factors, such as: obesity, smoking, drinking alcohol, among others. Adopting a healthy lifestyle, as well as guidance on having a mammogram, are actions that support the importance of surveillance and early detection of morphological changes that can be detected and later referred for screening. According to the General Directorate of Health, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women and is the second cause of death from cancer in women. Unfortunately, one in eight Portuguese women is affected by breast cancer. The fight against this disease begins with prevention and early diagnosis, and currently 85% of women who have had breast cancer are well after five years of the disease.
