The laryngoscope is a medical device that is widely used in most hospitals around the world. This device is used when the need arises to perform an oral intubation, although it is mostly used for endotracheal intubations.
The use of this device usually causes changes in the patient's parameters (heart rate, blood pressure, etc.) due to the force applied to the tongue and other soft bodies. In order to allow surgery to be carried out, it is customary to administer to the patient a set of drugs called in their entirety as anesthesia. With this procedure the patient is unconscious, with the muscles relaxed and muscle actions inhibited, eventually losing the ability to breathe autonomously.
There are two ways to provide auxiliary ventilation to a patient: using a mask or by endotracheal intubation. The latter has proved, over the years, to be the most effective solution and, for this reason, laryngoscopy is currently the most used resource in surgical interventions.
To perform assisted ventilation through intubation, two procedures can be used. The first is to introduce an endotracheal tube into the patient's throat in order to directly ventilate the lungs, and the second is to create an incision in the patient's throat through which the tube is introduced. As the latter requires an incision in the patient, it is only used if the former is not possible.
Laryngoscopy can be divided into two types: direct and indirect observation. In direct observation, the doctor visualizes the vocal cords directly (with the naked eye); while in indirect observation, the doctor observes them indirectly, usually using a video camera.
Because indirect observation implies more expensive equipment, this technique is not as widespread. The fact that the use of the laryngoscope involves the application of a high force on the patient's tongue causes changes in blood pressure, heart rate, among other symptoms.
