Today on our blog, we share the latest information on monkeypox virus and discuss the effectiveness of Clinell products in eliminating it.

What is monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a viral infection caused by an enveloped virus that belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family.

Are Clinell wipes effective against monkeypox?
While the role of surfaces in virus transmission is unclear, we have received several questions about the effectiveness of Clinell products. The effectiveness test of disinfectants (such as Clinell Universal) against viruses is assessed using the EN14476 effectiveness standard.
EN14476 states that demonstration of efficacy against vaccinia virus is sufficient to demonstrate efficacy against all enveloped viruses (of which monkeypox virus is one). Furthermore, monkeypox virus and vaccinia virus are closely related, so this comparison is particularly relevant.
Clinell Universal Wipes and Clinell Peracetic Acid Wipes have been tested against enveloped viruses by independent laboratories according to EN14476. Clinell Universal and Clinell Peracetic Acid Wipes meet the EN14476 standard, producing a 4-log reduction (99.99% elimination) against enveloped viruses in a contact time of 15 seconds.

Where are monkeypox infections found?
Typically, monkeypox infections are found in Central and West African countries such as Nigeria, Liberia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, in recent weeks, cases have been reported in Portugal, Spain and the UK.

How many cases of monkey pox are there in Portugal?
Safeguarding that the situation in Portugal "is being monitored and studied" and that these are "very recent" cases which, from a clinical point of view, translate into "very mild and benign situations". Today there are around 100 active cases of this virus in Portugal.

What are the symptoms of monkey pox?
According to UKSHA, the initial symptoms of monkeypox include fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion. [1] A rash may develop, usually starting on the face, then spreading to other parts of the body, including genitals.

How is smallpox spread?
The infection is usually transmitted through close contact with an infected patient, however, there is a very low risk of transmission to the general public. The sources of identified cases are being rapidly investigated by the UKHSA by raising awareness among healthcare professionals.[1]

Why is monkeypox emerging now?
The emergent nature of the disease has been attributed to:[2]
- Higher or more frequent exposure to animal reservoir species;
- Increased rate of human-to-human transmission;
- Advances in diagnostic capacity and health education;
- The cessation of the smallpox vaccine and the decline in immunity against Orthopoxviruses.
